मुख्यतः चिकित्सा या आपात स्थिति में ही प्रयोग होती है; बेहद तकनीकी शब्द है। 'ट्रेकियोस्टॉमी' (छेद या स्थायी खुली स्थिति) से न भ्रमित करें। आम तौर पर 'ट्रेकियोटॉमी करना' या 'आपातकालीन ट्रेकियोटॉमी' जैसे वाक्यांशों में सुनाई देता है।
