正式に物や財産の所有権や支配権を得ること。他人のものを自分のものとする意味でも使われます。

法律・ビジネスでよく使われます。日常会話ではあまり登場しません。「take possession of」は財産、契約、物品の引き渡しなどで使われ、比喩的な所有（take ownership）とは異なります。
