충분한 증거 없이 제한된 정보로 어떤 사실이나 상황을 추측하거나 짐작하는 것.

격식 있는 표현으로 주로 글이나 공식적인 상황에서 쓰며, 'surmise that...'와 같이 많이 사용됩니다. 일상에서는 'guess', 'suppose'가 더 자주 사용됩니다.

We can only surmise what happened last night.

우리는 어젯밤 무슨 일이 있었는지 **추측할** 수밖에 없다.
