Uma bainha é uma capa, geralmente de couro ou metal, usada para guardar ou proteger algo longo e fino, como uma faca, espada ou fio. Também pode significar qualquer camada protetora.

"Sheath" é formal ou técnico. Usado para lâminas ("knife sheath", "sword sheath"), mas também para camadas protetoras em biologia, tecnologia ("wire sheath") ou medicina. Não confunda com "sheath dress" (vestido justo, derivado da mesma ideia de proteção/cobertura).
