경기에서 상대팀이 득점하거나 이길 기회를 막기 위해 최대한 시간을 끄는 전략을 의미한다.

축구, 농구 등 스포츠에서 주로 쓰며, 일상에서는 거의 사용하지 않는다. 'run out the clock'도 같은 의미.
