船やボートが浅瀬などに意図せず乗り上げて動けなくなること。比喩的に、計画や話し合いが行き詰まる場合にも使う。

主に船やボートへの表現だが、計画や交渉事が行き詰まる時も比喩的に使う。比喩的用法はやや文語的で、日常会話よりも書き言葉で多い。『the ship ran aground』はよくある言い方。
