Definition

屋根は建物の最上部にある部分で、雨や日差しなどから家を守る役割があります。部屋の内側の上部も時に屋根と言われますが、通常は「天井」と呼ばれます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

普通は外側の一番上を指し、部屋の中の上部は「天井」と分けて使います。「屋根の上」「屋根を修理する」などの表現があります。'hit the roof'は怒るという意味の英語のイディオムです。
