어떤 사람이나 대상을 언급하거나 특정 대상을 가리킬 때 사용한다. 단어나 문구의 의미를 설명할 때도 쓴다.

주로 공식적이거나 설명문에서 많이 쓴다. 'means'와 혼동하지 말고, 'refers to'는 특정 대상을 가리키거나 설명할 때 사용한다.
