本や新聞、インターネットなどで情報を読み、自分で経験せずに何かを知ること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「read of」は少しかしこまった表現で、日常会話より文書（特にニュースや報告）で使われます。「read about」よりフォーマルです。新しい情報を読んで知る場合に使います。

I first read of the invention in a science magazine.
