Usado para descrever ar ou gás que é fino e tem pouco oxigênio, ou, figurativamente, algo relacionado a um grupo exclusivo ou de elite, de difícil acesso.

'Rarefied' é formal e costuma aparecer em textos acadêmicos para falar de ar em grande altitude ('rarefied air') ou de ambientes bem exclusivos ('círculo rarefeito'). Não use em situações informais.
