성, 요새, 도시를 적의 공격으로부터 보호하기 위해 쌓은 높고 두꺼운 방어벽.

'Ramparts'는 주로 복수로 쓰이며, 주로 옛날 성곽이나 역사적인 방어시설을 가리킬 때 사용된다. 현대 군사 시설에는 잘 사용하지 않는다. 문학이나 노래에도 자주 등장한다.
