主に金属や木でできた細長い棒が並んで設置されており、階段やバルコニー、通路の端などに安全のために使われる柵です。

「手すり」は全体の柵を指し、階段やバルコニーなど特定の場所と一緒に使われます（例: 階段の手すり）。「レール」（鉄道の線路）とは異なります。
