国の行政区画で、首都や主要都市以外の広い地域を指します。国によって「州」や「省」と呼ばれることがあります。

カナダや中国のように国ごとに名称が異なる場合があります（例：'province', 'state', 'prefecture'など）。日本では '都道府県' の '県' にあたります。
