物語や映画などで、中心となる人物や最も重要なキャラクターのこと。現実の出来事でも使われることがある。

文学や映画でよく使われます。「protagonist」は必ずしも「ヒーロー」ではなく、欠点や問題を抱えることもあります。「antagonist」は対立するキャラクターです。
