希望や自由、機会をもたらす場所や状況で、目標や夢とされることが多い。宗教的には、聖書で神がイスラエルの民に約束した土地を指す。

比喩的に成功や機会、困難からの脱出を表す場合によく使います。聖書の意味では大文字、通常の比喩的表現では小文字で書きます。物理的な場所以外にも人生の状況に使うことができます。
