Definition

상대방의 화나 불만을 풀기 위해 말이나 행동으로 기분을 달래는 것.

주로 상대방의 불만이나 화를 말이나 행동으로 풀어줄 때 씁니다. 공식적이어서 일상 대화보다는 격식을 차린 상황에서 사용합니다. ('try to placate', 'placate someone with')와 함께 자주 쓰입니다.

She tried to placate the crying child by giving him a toy.
