누군가를 인종, 종교, 신념 등의 이유로 반복적으로 나쁘게 대하거나 부당하게 대우하는 것.

주로 인권, 역사 등 공식적이고 심각한 상황에서 사용됨. 'for(…때문에)'와 자주 함께 쓰임. 'prosecute(기소하다)'와 혼동하지 않기.

They were persecuting him because of his religion.
