अक्सर किसी की आस्था या पहचान के कारण लंबे समय तक कष्ट या भेदभाव का सामना करने के लिए प्रयोग होता है। आमतौर पर ऐतिहासिक या सामाजिक संदर्भों में; passive रूप 'was persecuted' लोकप्रिय है। 'prosecuted' (कानूनी कार्यवाही) से न confund करें।
