光や視覚を研究する物理学の一分野。また、現代では特に政治や広報などで、ある出来事や状況が他人にどう見えるかという意味でも使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

科学的な意味と、社会・政治で「どう見えるか」という比喩的意味の両方で使います。政治では「the optics of...」は「見た目」「印象」というニュアンスです。「optics」は単数扱い。「optical」と混同しないよう注意しましょう。
