Genellikle iş, teknoloji veya ticari bağlamda 'off the shelf yazılım' gibi kullanılır. 'Özel üretim' (custom-made) teriminin karşıtıdır. Yemek ya da gündelik kullanım ürünlerinde pek kullanılmaz.
