Definition

声が小さくてはっきりしないため、何を言っているか聞き取りにくい話し方。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

自信がなかったり他人に聞かせたくないときに使われます。「mumbled an answer」は答えをはっきり言わなかった場合。「whisper」（はっきり聞こえる小声）や「mutter」（不満を込める）とは違います。
