海に住むとされる、上半身が人間で下半身が魚の姿をした伝説上の種族。男性も女性も含まれます。

主にファンタジー作品や神話、物語（例：『ハリー・ポッター』）で使います。「マーメイド」よりも包括的で、集団や社会全体を指す語です。日常会話ではほとんど使いません。
