誰かを助けが来ないような遠い場所や困難な場所に置き去りにすること。歴史的には無人島などに置いていく意味もある。

この単語は日常会話よりも文語や物語によく使われます。「marooned on an island」（島に取り残される）などが多い表現です。色の“マルーン”とは別なので注意しましょう。
