"lo" in Japanese

見よほら（古風な表現）

Definition

何かに注意を向けさせるための昔の英語表現。「見よ」や「ほら」に近い意味で、主に文学や定型句で使われます。

現代の日常会話ではほとんど使われません。「lo and behold」はユーモラスまたは劇的な響きでよく見かけます。意味を知っていれば十分です。

Lo, the sun rises over the hill.

**見よ**、太陽が丘の上に昇る。

And lo, there was a bright star in the sky.

そして**見よ**、空には明るい星があった。

The old book says, “Lo, I am with you.”

古い本には「**見よ**、私はあなたと共にいる」とある。

I opened the door and, lo and behold, my brother was standing there.

ドアを開けると、**ほら見てごらん**、兄が立っていた。

We checked the bag again and, lo and behold, the keys were inside the whole time.

もう一度カバンを調べると、**なんと**、鍵はずっと中にあった。

It sounds funny if you say lo in normal conversation today.
