É comum em contextos formais, académicos, médicos e policiais: 'identify a problem', 'identify the cause', 'identify the suspect'. 'Recognize' costuma estar mais ligado a reconhecer algo já conhecido, enquanto 'identify' enfatiza nomear, detetar ou confirmar exatamente o que é. Também aparece em 'identify as' para identidade de género, nacionalidade ou pertença a um grupo.
