Um hífen é o traço curto (-) usado para unir palavras ou separar sílabas, como em 'bem-estar' ou 'ex-aluno'.

O hífen não é o mesmo que o travessão (– ou —), que é mais longo. Usado em palavras compostas, divisão de sílabas no final de linhas e alguns números de telefone. Não confunda com underline (_) ou sinal de menos.
