Definition
Ficar numa posição segura, normalmente para se proteger de perigo ou mau tempo, ou preparar-se para uma situação difícil. Também pode significar concentrar-se e permanecer num lugar por algum tempo.

'Hunker down' é informal, comum no inglês americano em tempestades, emergências ou quando alguém tem de se concentrar numa tarefa longa. Combina com 'for the night', 'and wait'. Não se usa para relaxar normalmente, mas sim para preparação ou proteção.
