"hit the brakes" in Japanese
Definition
車やバイクなどを止めたり速度を落とすためにブレーキペダルを踏むこと。また何かの行動や進行を急に止める時にも使われることがある。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
くだけた表現で、主に車やバイクについて使われる。比喩的に行動や計画を急に止めるときにも使う。'suddenly hit the brakes' は「急に止まる」となる。'step on the gas'（加速する）とは反対。
