일부 동물들이 겨울 동안 에너지를 절약하고 추위를 견디기 위해 깊게 잠드는 상태를 말합니다. 오랜 기간 활동하지 않는 상태나 휴면을 의미하기도 합니다.

주로 과학, 교육 분야에서 사용됩니다. 동물의 겨울 행동 외에도 비유적으로 'economic hibernation'(경제적 침체)처럼 오래된 비활동에 쓸 수 있습니다. 일상적인 잠이나 짧은 낮잠과는 다릅니다.
