회사가 처음으로 주식을 일반에 공개하거나, 비밀이었던 정보를 모두에게 밝히는 것을 의미한다.

주로 사업에서 기업이 상장할 때 사용하지만, 비공개였던 사실을 공개할 때도 쓸 수 있다. 금융에서는 공식적, 그 외에는 중립적으로 사용됨.
