오랜 시간 매우 추운 온도에 노출되어 피부와 조직이 심하게 손상되는 현상입니다. 주로 손가락, 발가락, 코, 귀에 발생합니다.

의학적, 추운 날씨에서 주로 사용됩니다. '저체온증(hypothermia)'과 달리 신체 일부에만 사용하며, 주로 '발가락에 동상'처럼 부위와 함께 씁니다.
