Usado quase sempre de modo figurado para expressar orgulho ou apoio a uma identidade, causa ou grupo. Muito comum em esportes, nacionalismo ou movimentos sociais. Às vezes também se diz 'wave the flag.' O sentido literal só aparece com contexto claro.
