서로 다른 높이의 지형을 구분하는 급격한 경사면이나 절벽. 주로 침식이나 지질 변화로 생김.

주로 지리나 환경, 지질 관련 문맥에서 사용합니다. 갑작스럽게 높이 차가 나는 자연 지형에 쓰며, ‘cliff’(해안 절벽)나 ‘slope’(완만한 경사)와는 다릅니다. ‘escarpment의 가장자리’ 같은 표현이 자주 나옵니다.
