غالبًا ما يُستخدم في السياقات الرسمية والأدبية؛ يشير عادةً إلى قصائد الحزن، وأحيانًا لقطع موسيقية حزينة. لا تخلط بينه وبين 'eulogy' (خطاب تأبيني). عبارات شائعة: 'write an elegy'، 'read an elegy for'.
