学校で最も成績が優秀な生徒を指す言葉です。歴史的に、リーダーや軍の指揮官という意味もあります。

主にイギリス、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドで使われ、アカデミックな文脈や歴史の話で見られます。アメリカ英語ではほとんど使われません。
