誰かや何かを危険な、極限の、または重大なところまで追い詰めること。多くは感情面や体力、忍耐力について使う。

主に深刻な状況や感情的な極限状態を表すときに使うイディオムです。例えば「drive to the brink of madness（狂気の瀬戸際まで追い込む）」のような形で使います。軽い話題ではあまり使いません。
