अपने सच्चे भावनाओं या इरादों को छिपाना, बहाना बनाकर या झूठ बोलकर। यानी, अपने विचार या भावना को ईमानदारी से बताना नहीं।

यह शब्द औपचारिक और साहित्यिक है; रोज़ की बातचीत में विरल है। अक्सर जानबूझ कर धोखा देने या असली मंशा छिपाने के लिए इस्तेमाल होता है, नकारात्मक अर्थ है। 'motives', 'intentions' और 'appearance' के साथ सामान्य है। 'misleading' से अलग है, वो ज्यादा सामान्य है।
