“Disbelieve” 比 “not believe” 更正式且較少用，通常表達懷疑或強烈否認某事為真。常見於書面或正式討論、新聞。常與故事、謠言或證詞搭配，不太用於針對個人（“I disbelieve him” 不自然，建議用 “I don't believe him”）。
