주로 아메리칸 스타일의 작고 캐주얼한 식당을 의미한다. 가끔 식사 중인 사람을 지칭하기도 하지만 빈도는 낮다.

대부분 식당을 의미하며 American diner라고도 부른다. 'all-night diner', 'roadside diner'처럼 주로 장소나 유형을 설명할 때 자주 쓴다. 'dinner'와 혼동 주의.
