'Constable' शब्द ब्रिटेन और कॉमनवेल्थ देशों में आम है, जहाँ यह सबसे निचला पुलिस पद होता है। अमेरिका में इसका उपयोग बहुत कम और ऐतिहासिक माना जाता है। अक्सर 'police constable' जैसे संयोजन में आता है। 'Officer' (ऊँचा पद) से न मिलाएँ।
