Definition

誰かや何かをある特定の（多くは否定的な）状況や場所に置くこと。多くの場合、その後の状況を制御できません。また、何かを他の人に預けたり処分を委ねる意味もあります。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

やや形式的で、書き言葉でよく使われます。'consign to oblivion'・'consigned to history'など否定的な場面が多いです。'to'の後に名詞が続きます。'assign to'（任務を割り当てる）と間違えないようにしましょう。
