他の人と一緒に住みながら、部屋と食事が提供される宿泊施設のこと。

現代日本ではあまり使われない言葉で、歴史や物語作品でよく見られます。「ホテル」や「ホステル」とは異なり、食事つきです。「下宿を営む」「下宿に住む」などと使います。
