英語の‘behold’の過去形で、特に素晴らしいものや美しいものを目にする、観察するという意味です。主に古典文学や詩で使われます。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
‘Beheld’は現代英語の日常会話ではほとんど使われず、詩や古典文学、宗教的な文章に現れます。普通の会話では『saw』や『noticed』を使います。'we beheld the sunrise'は「私たちは日の出を眺めた」という意味。
