어떤 주제에 대해 직접적으로 말하지 않고 돌려서 말하는 것. 주로 본론을 피할 때 사용됨.

주로 구어체, 회화에서 사용. 대부분 'beat about the bush'로 많이 씀. 'beat'의 원래 뜻과 다름.
