Daha çok resmi ya da yarı resmi ortamlarda, yazılı ve kibar konuşmalarda kullanılır. Günlük, samimi konuşmada tercih edilmez. 'however' veya 'nevertheless' ile benzer, fakat daha eski bir ifadedir.
