大通りから離れた、狭くて静かな通りや人通りの少ない道のこと。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

多くの場合複数形で使われ、「walk」「wander」「grew up in」などの表現とよく組み合わせます。「alley（路地）」より広めの通りを指します。犯罪や非合法行為も含む比喩的な使い方もあります。
