上へ進むこと、たとえば山に登ることや地位・レベルが高くなる過程。

主にフォーマルや専門的な場面で使われます。山登りなど実際の上昇や、会社などでの出世にも使われます。'accent'（アクセント）と混同しないように。'steep ascent'や'rapid ascent'などの言い回しがあります。
