ギリシャ神話の一つの巨人で、たくさんの目を持ち、眠らないことで知られる人物。また、非常に注意深い人を比喩的に指すこともある。

「アルゴス」は文学や歴史的な文脈で使われることが多く、日常会話では珍しい。比喩的に使う場合は観察力や警戒心が非常に強い人に対して用いる。
