船を止めるために水中に沈める、通常金属製の重い物体。船とロープや鎖でつながっている。

主に船や海の文脈で使われますが、「支え」や「安定」を意味する比喩表現にも使われます。「錨を下ろす」「錨を上げる」などの使い方が一般的です。

The sailor dropped the ancora into the water.
