道徳的、健康上、または法律的な理由で、意図的に何かをしないこと、使わないこと、参加しないことを選ぶこと。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
ややフォーマルで、公式・法律・健康に関係する場面で使われることが多いです。'abstain from alcohol'（お酒を控える）、'abstain from voting'（投票を棄権する）などとよく使います。通常は名詞または動名詞が続きます。よりフォーマルな'refrain from'と混同しないようにしましょう。
